SECRET WAR NURSE
About
Chue’s Life in Laos
In Laos, Chue completed the 4th grade and began nursing training at the age of 14 through a program supported by USAID. She was recruited by a medical assistance manager and, despite the demanding training, long hours, and hard work, she recalls this period as one of the happiest times of her life. During breaks, she explored the lush, mountainous landscapes of the town and found joy and purpose in caring for the sick and wounded—soldiers and villagers alike. Still, she holds deep sorrow over the “senseless war” that shaped so much of her early life.
Chue faced profound personal hardships, including losing her parents at a young age and experiencing divorce—an uncommon and stigmatized situation for women in her culture at the time. Yet she remained remarkably resilient. Guided by her faith and strengthened by what she describes as God’s blessings, she learned to rely on her inner strength and embraced the independence and courage needed to pursue her goals.
Where’s Chue Today
Chue’s Story After the War
Chue immigrated to the United States in January 1976, eventually settling in California. Today, she is married to Kevin Fisher and is a proud mother of five adult children. As a new immigrant, Chue devoted herself to empowering Hmong women, educating them on housekeeping, health, and family planning. Later, as a social worker, she worked with disabled and elderly individuals—providing resources, care, and education on healthy aging.
Chue now focuses on maintaining her own health and finding happiness in everyday life. Her guiding philosophy is simple yet powerful:
“Be kind to yourself and love yourself. Be happy—only you can make yourself happy; no one else can. Live life without regret. Be positive and always look for the bright side when facing difficulties.”
