Fresno Chapter

Established September 16, 2018

The Fresno Chapter serves as a bridge between the Hmong community and healthcare access. Through scholarships, professional guidance, health education, and cultural advocacy, they not only support Hmong nurses but also uplift community well being. This chapter is essential for reinforcing both cultural identity and health equity in the Central Valley.

The Fresno Chapter of the Hmong Nurses Association (HNA-Fresno) is a dedicated collective of Hmong nursing professionals and students committed to advancing health equity, education, and cultural representation in California’s Central Valley. As a local extension of the national HNA organization, our chapter actively works to support Hmong nurses through mentorship, scholarship opportunities, and leadership development.

We are passionate about bridging the gap between healthcare providers and the Hmong community by offering culturally responsive health education, organizing wellness clinics, and partnering with community-based organizations for outreach events. From empowering future Hmong nurses to honoring the legacy of our elders, HNA-Fresno is proud to lead with compassion, culture, and care.

Join us as we continue to elevate the voice of Hmong healthcare professionals and promote wellness within our communities.

Our Mission

Supports and empowers Hmong nurses in the Central Valley through advocacy, mentorship, cultural outreach, professional development, and community health initiatives.

Our Story

How We Got Started

Fresno has been home to one of the largest Hmong populations outside of Southeast Asia since the early 1980s. Many early refugee families resettled in the Central Valley through agricultural sponsorships, drawn by job opportunities and a growing support network.

As the Hmong Nurses Association (HNA) gained national momentum, Dr. Padao Yang recognized the importance of establishing a local chapter to serve the unique needs of the Fresno community. Under her leadership, the Fresno Chapter of the Hmong Nurses Association was officially founded in September 2018. This new chapter united local Hmong nurses and students to build mentorship programs, offer scholarships, and lead culturally responsive health initiatives—empowering the next generation of healthcare professionals while addressing health disparities within the community.

Where We Are Now

The Fresno Chapter of the Hmong Nurses Association remains highly active and deeply engaged in the community, with a strong presence in public health, cultural celebrations, and educational outreach. The chapter plays a vital role in major local events, serving as a trusted partner in health screenings, mentorship programs, and awareness initiatives that support Hmong families and future healthcare professionals. HNA–Fresno is frequently involved in community gatherings—offering volunteer-led health booths, student engagement opportunities, and culturally informed outreach—while maintaining a visible and supportive role throughout the Central Valley.
